Mahavitaran engages project management consultants for speedy implementation of infrastructure plan Mumbai, August, 2006

For speedy and qualitative development of electricity distribution grid in Maharashtra state, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (Mahavitaran) has decided to engage professional services from project management consultants (PMCs) for speedy implementation of its ambitious infrastructure development and upgradation plan of Rs 14314.84 crore.

The company has engaged four well-known consultancy firms viz. M/s Louis Berger Group Inc as a main PMC, M/s Feedback Ventures Pvt Limited, M/s Consulting Engineering Services Pvt Ltd, M/s K R Bedmutha and Techno Associates Pvt Ltd in joint venture with Unison Project Management Pvt Ltd.

They will help the Mahavitaran to use standard and proved latest technology for its work, informed Mr. Sanjay Bhatia, Managing Director of Mahavitaran.

The PMCs selected have expertise, skill and necessary experience for such huge work.

The Mahavitaran has been entrusted the work of power distribution in the state of Maharashtra. After restructuring, a comprehensive review of the existing infrastructure in the company was taken and it was found that there is an immediate need of renovation, modernization, upgradation and augmentation of the existing system.

There is also a need to adopt the latest technology available for the good governance of the company, Mr Bhatia said.

The Electricity Act 2003, which brought changes in the power sector, has also thrown up many challenges before the Mahavitaran. In order to prepare the Mahavitaran to meet these challenges effectively, a comprehensive 5-year infrastructure plan 2005-2006 to 2009-2010 has been prepared.

The objectives of the infrastructure plan are aimed at providing reliable and quality supply to the consumers, meeting the load growth, upgrading the existing worn out system, providing administrative support with the latest technology and reducing distribution losses.

In the first phase, the works proposed under the infrastructure plan for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 will be undertaken for completion on turnkey basis as a part of the implementation strategy. The work is of a massive scale both in terms of physical quantities and in terms of financial outlay. In order to ensure timely execution of the works with the required quality, Mahavitaran has sought the expertise of these reputed firms.

In addition to the work of supplying power to households, commercial complexes, industries and agriculture pumps, following works will be also undertaken with the help of the PMCs viz. setting up new 33/11KV sub-stations, 22/11KV sub-stations, switching sub-stations, distribution transformers of various capacities (viz 630, 500, 315, 300, 200, 100, 25, 16 KVA, etc.), erection of 33KV, 22KV, 11KV lines, LT single phase and three phase lines, augmentation of capacity of existing power transformers, replacement of deteriorated structures, circuit breakers, energisation of the agriculture pumps, extending the electric supply to households, industries, etc. Mr. Bhatia informed.

There are 11 zones of mahavitaran. Zone wise Infrastructure plan cost is: Bhandup- Rs 868.29 crore, Kalyan zone -Rs 840 crore, Konkan zone- Rs 463.60 crore, Kolhapur zone- Rs 2386.42 crore, Latur zone- Rs 1603.31 crore, Nashik zone- Rs 3057.88 crore, Pune zone- Rs 1333.62 crore, Amravati zone- Rs 1312.79 crore, Aurangabad zone- Rs 923.84 crore, Nagpur urban zone -Rs 712.91 crore and Nagpur rural zone- Rs 811.64 crore.
